The HeArt Box: A Space for Art, Community, and Collaboration
Founded by local artist Jill Sans in the summer of 2018, The HeArt Box has become a cherished haven for artists and art enthusiasts alike. After many years of participating in and organizing pop-up markets with fellow local artists, Sans recognized the need for a permanent space that could bring art and community together—a place where all could feel comfortable, learn, share, and create. With the underlying mission of supporting artists in cultivating meaningful careers in the arts through collaboration and support, The HeArt Box has quickly established itself as a leading creative hub in Flagstaff.
Jill Sans, a Flagstaff resident since 1995, found inspiration in the city's vibrant artistic scene since her arrival. Setting her sights on pursuing a career in the arts, she attended Northern Arizona University, where she earned her BFA in Visual Communications, focusing on Graphic Design. However, it was her short stint in Seattle that ignited a deeper passion for art and design. Recalling her exposure to diverse art forms such as indigenous, contemporary, and underground art, Sans returned to Flagstaff in 2002, determined to make her mark on the local creative landscape.
Embarking on a new path, Sans became a body piercer and jewelry curator at Burly Fish Tattoo & Piercing. Working closely with jewelry designers from around the world, she curated a unique collection that showcased one-of-a-kind pieces, exclusive to Northern Arizona. Simultaneously, she developed her own artistic perspective, exploring the realms of painting, collage, and printmaking. Through her personal artistic journey, Sans recognized the power that art has to unite, inspire, and transform.
With this realization, The HeArt Box was born—an inclusive space that defies traditional art gallery norms and embraces the concept of community. At The HeArt Box, artists and art enthusiasts can find solace in an environment where their hearts and creativity are at the forefront. Sans, driven by her passion for her art and supporting fellow artists, created a platform where collaboration and support are core values.
The HeArt Box serves as a multifunctional space, offering a wide range of activities for artists and the local community. From workshops and classes for all skill levels to exhibitions and community events, there is something for everyone. Here, artists can connect with like-minded individuals, forge meaningful collaborations, and nurture their artistic careers. The HeArt Box is more than just a physical space it is a living space that evolves and allows for growth.
